Noer's Sumur Tanpa Dasar This research paper entitled An Analysis of the Strategy of Translating Equivalence at Pragmatic Level in the Translation of Arifin C. Noer's Sumur Tanpa Dasar is conducted to investigate the establishment of equivalence at pragmatic level and the translation methods employed in the translation of Arifinc C. Noer's Sumur Tanpa Dasar, that is The Bottomless Well. It employs qualitative method by using descriptive analysis. The samples are thirteen dialogue texts taken from both versions of the plays. They are analyzed based on the two levels of analyses: analysis of context and analysis of text, which cover the aspects of coherence and implicature. The findings reveal that in the effort to establish equivalence at pragmatic level, the translation works out particularly the implied meaning of the text. Every effort done to set the equivalence has the same purpose that is to avoid unwanted implicature. The implicature conveyed in the source text has to beaccomodated to the target text appropriately, sothat the target text can reach its equivalence as well as the coherence that is the same as the way the source text intended its implicature. In some cases where the texts cannot be translated literally, the translators of the drama tend to use adaptation method, while outside that cases, they mainly operate semantic translation. Based on the analysis carried out to the thirteen sample texts, the final result of the analysis shows that the target text does more than only translating the source text. Further, it interprets the implied meaning worked out in the source text in order to reach its pragmatic equivalence as well as the coherence.
