Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode penelitian kualitatif dengan pendekatan deskriptif. Subyek pada penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII di salah satu SMP Budi Utomo Medan yang berjumlah 20 siswa. Dari kelas tersebut kemudian dipilih dua siswa dari masing-masing kelompok self-esteem & self-confidence untuk dijadikan subjek wawancara. Data dalam penelitian ini diperoleh dari tes, angket dan wawancara. Hasil tes dan hasil wawancara kemampuan komunikasi matematis kemudian dianalisis berdasarkan self-esteem & self-confidence siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa self-esteem & self-confidence siwa kelas VIII SMP Budi Utomo Medan terbagi menjadi tiga, yaitu tinggi, sedang dan rendah. Kemampuan Komunikasi Matematis siswa dengan tingkat self-esteem tinggi & self-confidence tinggi mampu menjelaskan/menulis matematika, menggambar matematika, dan ekspresi matematis/representasi matematis. Kemampuan komunikasi matematis siswa dengan tingkat self-esteem sedang & self-confidence sedang cukup mampu menjelaskan/menulis matematika, menggambar matematika, dan ekspresi matematis/representasi matematis. Kemampuan komunikasi matematis siswa dengan tingkat self-esteem rendah & self-confidence rendah kurang mampu menjelaskan/menulis matematika, menggambar matematika, dan ekspresi matematis/representasi matematis. This study aims to describe students' mathematical communication skills, describe students' self-esteem & self-confidence, and describe mathematical communication skills in terms of self-esteem & self-confidence. The method used in this study is a qualitative research method with a descriptive approach. The subjects in this study were students of eighth grade in one of the SMP Budi Utomo Medan, totaling 20 students. From that grade, two students from each self-esteem & self-confidence group were selected to be interview subjects. The data in this study were obtained from tests, questionnaires and interviews. The test results and interview results of mathematical communication skills were then analyzed based on students' self-esteem & self-confidence. The results show that the self-esteem and self-confidence of the eighth grade students of SMP Budi Utomo Medan were divided into three, namely high, medium and low. The student communication ability with high self-esteem & high self-confidence are able to explain/write mathematics, draw mathematics, and mathematical expressions/mathematical representations. The student communication ability with moderate self-esteem & moderate self-confidence are quite able to explain/write mathematics, draw mathematics, and mathematical expressions/mathematical representations. The student communication ability with low self-esteem & low self-confidence are less able to explain/write mathematics, draw mathematics, and mathematical expressions/mathematical representations.
