Summary: | The use of English in teaching and learning of sciences and math is a pressing issue in Indonesian system of education. This study attempts to portray the process of the use of English in sciences and math class, and the students' and the science and math teachers' perception on the use of English as a medium of instruction in teaching and learning science and math. This study was conducted in a pre-international secondary school standard in Pekanbaru, Riau involving three science teachers, one math teachers, and 76 eleventh year students from three different classes. In designing the research, qualitative case study method was applied. The data of this study were collected through observation, questionnaire, and interview. The observation is needed to check whether English is used or not. After doing the observation, the questionnaire as main source data was shared to the teachers and students. The questionnaire for the teacher was 10 item questions and 11 questions are addressed to the students. Finally, the interview is taken to support the questionnaire. The research found out that the respondents agreed to the importance of English Language in everyday life as well as career opportunity. However they felt that learning science and mathematics was very difficult and demanding. Even though most of them had positive point of view on the use of English in teaching and learning science and mathematics, it seemed that the teachers and students were still not confident to use English. Some of them combined English and Indonesia and others were afraid to use English in communicating. The result also showed that the school and all of the elements of it worked hard in being RSBI. It is also hoped that the findings of this research will help the teachers to work wisely in order to overcome students' learning difficulties and to promote effective learning among students. It is also expected to government to see the readiness of the school's equipments, the teachers, and the school's human resources in selecting a school become RSBI. In addition, this research may inspire other researcher to conduct research on issues regarding the implementation of RSBI/SBI that uses English as a medium of instruction. |
