Pemahaman konsep merupakan suatu aspek yang penting dalam pembelajaran, karena dengan memahami konsep siswa dapat mengembangkan kemampuannya pada setiap materi pelajaran. Namun pada kenyataannya pemahaman konsep matematika kurang dapat dikembangkan dalam proses pembelajaran. Berdasarkan hasil pra survei yang meliputi observasi awal dan wawancara guru matematika pada salah satu Mts swasta di Kota Tangerang, menunjukkan bahwa pemahaman siswa pada konsep operasi bentuk aljabar masih rendah, nilai hasil rata-rata siswa masih di bawah nilai KKM. Dengan demikian, perlu adanya penelitian mengenai pemahaman siswa pada konsep operasi bentuk aljabar. Tingkat pemahaman konsep siswa dapat dianalisis menggunakan salah satu teori yaitu teori APOS. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan pemahaman siswa pada konsep operasi bentuk aljabar yang dianalisis berdasarkan teori APOS dan ditinjau dari kemampuan awal matematika. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode studi kasus. Subjek penelitian yaitu siswa kelas VII pada salah satu MTs swasta di Kota Tangerang, yang selanjutnya diambil 6 subjek untuk dianalisis lebih lanjut. Pengumpulan data dilakukan menggunakan instrumen tes berupa soal operasi bentuk aljabar, wawancara dan studi dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tingkat pemahaman siswa pada konsep operasi bentuk aljabar berbeda-beda tiap kemampuan yaitu,: 1) pemahaman siswa yang memiliki kemampuan awal matematika tinggi sampai pada tahapan skema, artinya siswa dapat memenuhi semua indikator tahapan aksi, proses, objek dan skema; 2) pemahaman siswa yang memiliki kemampuan awal matematika sedang sampai pada tahapan objek, artinya siswa hanya dapat memenuhi indikator tahapan aksi, proses dan objek; 3) pemahaman siswa yang memiliki kemampuan awal matematika rendah sampai pada tahapan proses, artinya siswa hanya dapat memenuhi indikator pada dua tahapan saja yaitu tahapan aksi dan proses. Understanding concepts is an important aspect of learning, because by understanding the concepts students can develop their skills in each subject matter. But in reality, understanding the concept of mathematics is less developed in the learning process. Based on pre survey results which include initial observation and math teacher interviews at one of the private Mts in Tangerang City, showing that students' understanding of algebraic form operations concepts is still low, the average student's score was still below KKM score. Thus, there is a need for research on the understanding of students in the concept of algebraic form operations. The student's level of understanding concept can be analyzed using one of the theories, namely APOS theory. The study aims to describe students' understanding of the concept of operation of algebraic forms analyzed based on APOS theory and reviewed from the early mathematical abilities. This research uses a qualitative approach with case study methods. The research subjects were class VII students at one of the private MTs in Tangerang City, which were then taken by 6 subjects for further analysis. Data collection was carried out using test instruments in the form of algebraic forms operations questions, interviews and documentation studies. The results showed that the level of understanding of students in the concept of operation of algebra form varies from each ability, namely: 1) the understanding of students who had high initial mathematical abilities reached the schema stage, meaning that students could fulfill all indicators of the stages of action, process, object and scheme; 2) the understanding of students who have medium initial mathematical abilities reaches the object stage, meaning that students can only fulfill the indicators for the action, process and object stages; 3) the understanding of students who have low initial mathematical abilities reaches the process stage, meaning that students can only fulfill the indicators in only two stages, namely the action and process stages.
