520 |a The present study concerns a problem faced by scholarship grantees in achieving a good speaking score for the IELTS before they pursue a higher education overseas. This study was undertaken to find out the strategies EAP course participants use in learning speaking for IELTS. It was also aimed at finding out the most effective strategies as perceived by them. The participants were 80 grantees of DIKTI for batch 2012. This study is descriptive. It is largely qualitative with a touch of quantitative method. The data were collected through questionnaire, interview, and classroom observation. The study finds that most of the participants used socioaffective strategy - that is Cooperation and Clarification strategies - and perceived this strategy as the most effective one. There are three problems encountered by the participants that were revealed from the interview: having bad experience with English teachers in the past, being mocked when speaking English in public, and having no partner to practice speaking English. The results of this study are intended to provide a reference and information on speaking learning for IELTS preparation program.
