Description
Summary:This study is entitled ''The Teaching of English for Science and Technology (A study of EST Teaching-Learning Process at the 2nd semester students of Mechanical Engineering Department, Bandung Polytechnic)''. It aims to identify and describe the types of syllabus applied by the lecturer and the students' responses to the given tasks, also to investigate the teaching strategies applied by the lecturer for students of Mechanical Engineering Department in teaching English for Science and Technology. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method that was selected through classroom observation, interview, questionnaire, and document analysis. Based on that, this study describes the practice of English for Science and Technology in Mechanical Engineering Department Bandung Polytechnic among 30 students in class A year 2009 and an English lecturer as the samples. The limited information regarding the existence of English for Science and Technology practice in Indonesian higher education becomes the consideration in this research. The study reveals that the lecturer applied the Functional/Notional Syllabus as the criteria of the syllabus and The Organizational Syllabus as the stages of the syllabus. Language Centered Course Design is classified as the variety of approach to ESP course design. Otherwise, on teaching strategy the lecturer used Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). Moreover, the students' response showed that the students have no problem with the communication tasks which involved all the learners in the foreign language learning. It is recommended that further study be conducted to look more closely at the teaching method as well as the teaching of English for Science and Technology in the other universities.
