ABSTRACT This study is entitled Subtitling Strategies in Cartoon Film (An analysis of English - Indonesian Subtitling of The Simpsons Movie). The study was aimed to find out the strategies employed in the film. This study employed descriptive method in analyzing the data collected. The collected data then were analyzed based on the subtitling strategy drawn from Gottlieb (1998). In analyzing the data, there were several steps conducted: first, making transcription. Second, analyzing each dialogue and the subtitle to discover the subtitling strategy. Finally, all subtitles containing the same types of strategies were clustered and quantified. The findings of the study showed that the subtitler employs 8 strategies of subtitling, namely expansion (56), paraphrase (90), transfer (310), imitation (136), dislocation (4), condensation (32), decimation (62), and deletion (91). It also found that besides using Gottlieb's subtitling strategies, the subtitler also used combination of the strategies in subtitling the dialogues. The use of a subtitling strategy would be on the basis of subtitler's preference and length of dialogue. Synchronization, legibility, and readability might contribute to the adjustment of constraints and limitations in subtitling process.
