Summary: | This research entitled "The Analysis of Assertive Speech Act Category on President Yudhoyono's Speech Perceiving Bank Century Case" aims to investigate the assertive speech act in the Presidential speech. In particular, the research focuses on the functions of assertives and how President Yudhoyono observes politeness in the speech. The research applies Searle's speech act categories (1969) and Brown and Levinson's Politeness Strategies (1978) as frameworks. The research used two speeches spoken by President Yudhoyono on 23rd November 2009 and 4th March 2010 as the data and used qualitative as the method of analysis. The analyses show that of the functions of assertives, i.e. to describe, to assert, and state, description appears to be the most frequently used. The President seemed to or need to explain the reason for bailing out century. Further, the analyses show that President Yudhoyono observes politeness by applying three politeness strategies in the speeches. President Yudhoyono aims to save his face toward Bank Century particularly, toward the issue of the bailout misuse that involved him and Democratic Party. The research concludes that the aim of President Yudhoyono in delivering the speech is not to overcome the problem that appeared due to the bailout of Bank Century, but to clarify the issue that has caused him and Democratic Party blamed toward the misuse of the fund of Bank Century bailout. It is proved by none of declarative speech act and bald on record strategy found in the speeches. |
