It aims to a) discover the utterances used by the main character in Bring It On movie in expressing her dislikes, b) to investigate the speech acts categories of each utterance based on their characteristics, and c) to examine the roles of the contexts of situation in the production of the utterances. This study uses Speech Act as the framework. In analyzing the data, it applies Searle's Speech Act categories and Hymes' mnemonic SPEAKING. Fifty expressions of dislike are discovered in the data. 23 of them are included in Representative category. It indicates that the speaker expressed her dislikes based on what she believed to be true. It is also revealed that the contexts of situation play significant roles in the production of utterances. They can be applied in recognizing what, where, when, why, and how the feelings of dislike are expressed. To conclude, this movie contains the concept of freedom of expressing dislikes. It can also be an evidence of Speech Acts theory applied in revealing the meaning of expressions in movie script. | ||
