520 |a This research entitled 'Using a Series of Pictures in Teaching Writing Procedural Texts (a Quasi-Experimental Research at the Twelfth Grade Students of SMKN 3 in Bandung)' was to investigate the research question whether or not a series of pictures was effective in teaching writing procedural texts. Besides, this research was also aimed to find out students' responses toward the use of a series of pictures in teaching writing procedural texts. In selecting the sample, the twelfth grade students of SMKN 3 Bandung were selected by using purposive sampling method. There were two classes as the samples, XII PJ 2 as the experimental group and XII PJ 3 as the control group. Meanwhile, the method used to investigate the research questions was the quasi-experimental with quantitative and qualitative approach. After conducting some treatments, the result showed that a series of pictures was effective in teaching writing procedural texts. The effectiveness could be seen from the mean post-test differences between the experimental and the control groups which were analyzed by SPSS 16.0 for windows. The experimental group score after treatments was higher (M = 80.57, SE = 0.750) than the control group score (M = 67.57, SE = 0.847). In addition, t_obs of the experimental group was -13.582, which meant that the t_obs was not between ± t_crit (2.0504 and -2.0504) or (t_obs > t_crit or t_obs < t_crit) with large effect size (r = 0.652). Furthermore, the effectiveness was also supported by students' responses in questionnaire and interview. Most of students agreed that a series of pictures was effective in improving their writing ability (83% agreed, 9% strongly agreed, but only 9% disagreed). The students' improvement were in terms of finding appropriate vocabulary, understanding the text and language features of the text, finding ideas and organizing their writing structures. Meanwhile, the obstacle faced by students was arranging the right sentences of a text when they found unfamiliar topic or instructions that they had not experienced before.
