The Aim of this study is to investigate how men manifest their power upon women and how women resist men's power in the novel Ayat-ayat Cinta by Habiburrahman El Shirazy. The analysis tried to answer the questions: (1) in what ways are men power manifested upon women? ; And (2) how do women resist the power exercised on them as evidenced on the novel? The analysis uses qualitative approach and descriptive method, and close reading is applied to understand the content of the novel. The study reveals that there are three types of power manifested by men upon women; coercive power, reward power, and expert power. Men use three ways in manifesting their power; verbal action, physical action, and psychological action. The study also reveals that there are two types of resistance performed by women against men's power; open resistance and close resistance. Women use two ways in resisting men's power exercised on them; verbal action and extreme action. This reflects how Egypt socio-cultural condition put men and women in hierarchy in their society.
