Summary: | Speaking is one of the important skills that students need to have especially for students of vocational high school since it links to a great deal of their success in life especially in the work fields. This research investigated the implementation of Educational Drama in improving students' speaking ability. The aims of this research were to find out the roles of Educational Drama in improving students' speaking ability and to reveal students opinions on the use of Educational Drama. This research employed classroom action research which was conducted at a vocational high school in Bandung involving 36 first-grade students. For the analysis, it used a qualitative approach supported with quantitative data to answer the research questions. Speaking tests, observations, questionnaire, and interview were employed to gain the data. This research showed that there were some improvements of students' speaking ability and progress of their behavior in class during learning and teaching process. The data gained from speaking test showed that students' scores gradually improved from cycle to cycle in terms of comprehension, vocabularies, fluency, pronunciation, and grammar. The mean of students' scores was 76.70 in cycle 1, 75.03 in cycle 2, 79.35 in cycle 3 and 89.11 in cycle 4. The results of questionnaire and interview analysis also showed that students had positive opinions on the use of Educational Drama in terms of providing them more practice, improving their motivation to learn English, creating such enjoyable 'atmosphere' of learning, encouraging interaction and working in groups, and developing their personality and self confidence. Based on the findings, it is suggested that to gain more comprehensive and accurate data, the teacher may need three video cameras which are placed in different angels. In addition, to make learners more interested in learning, he/she may need to explore more drama techniques and make sure that Educational Drama that he/she may need to apply in classroom has been planned well. |
