Summary:The present study is entitled "Portrayal of Mother Characters in Two Selected Short Stories Taken from Djenar Maesa Ayu's Mereka Bilang, Saya Monyet!". It is aimed to find out the mother portrayal in those two selected short stories. The data resources of this research are two short stories of Djenar Maesa Ayu Mereka Bilang, Saya Monyet. The stories are "Durian" and "Waktu Nayla". The research was conducted by using the descriptive method. The instrument for this research was document analysis. The tool of analysis for this research was existentialist feminism proposed by Simone de Beauvoir. The result of study indicates that there are two mother portrayals, those are: the mother is considered having feminine characteristic; the mother is portrayed to be oppressed. Through the study, it has been proven that the feminine character is not a given aspect but it is created by the society and its purpose is to create an ideal mother who can be accepted by the society.
