Summary:ABSTRACT This paper is entitled An Analysis of Translation Strategies in Dubbed Version Cartoon Movie Entitled Shrek. This research is aimed at investigating the translation strategies in translating Shrek cartoon movie, revealing the translation mistakes which occurred in Shrek dubbed movie and the causes of the mistakes, and analyzing the quality of translation product. The descriptive qualitative method was applied in conducting this research. The data were divided into primary data, namely, the original and dubbed version movie of Shrek, and the transcription dialogues of English and Indonesian movie scripts, and secondary data to support research material, namely, the interview and observation. The data which were analyzed were the primary data by using the theory of translation strategies by Canos and Varela to analyze the translation strategies, the theory of translation mistakes by Pioli and Rosi to reveal the translation mistakes, and the theory of the requirements of good translation by Barnwell to analyze the translation quality. It was discovered that 90% translation strategies were applied in the movie for each category, the match of the lips and body movements (Visual Synchronization), the voice character of the actor or actress in the movie (Characterization), and the translator's capacity to react before problems related to cultural variation (Translator's Culture). As this study showed that there were 119 mistakes found in 705 movie dialogues, or 17% total for all categories. The classifications for each category are Softening of Vulgar Register (4), Omission of Information (24), Distortion of Meaning (54), Distortion of Possessive Reference (12), Choice of Words (16), and Tenor (9). The translation product, which is Shrek dubbed cartoon movie script, has a good translation and fulfilled the criteria of Accuracy, Clarity, and Naturalness. The meaning of the message of the source language is transferred accurately into the target language, and it can be understood by the audiences. The dialogues were intelligible and the translators used common words because they sound familiar for the children. The target language structure is natural and it does not sound strange. Regarding the findings of the research, it concludes that Shrek dubbed movie has a good translation quality. Comparing with the quantity of the movie dialogues, the translation mistakes which occurred in the movie were still far different from them. The dialogues were meaningful and understandable by the audiences, and they were generally acceptable. Furthermore, the length of the sentence had been synchronized with the match of the lips and body movements, and the voice character of the dubbers is closely similar to the voice character of the actors/actress in the movie.
