Summary: | This study reports on the analysis of category shifts in complex sentences in Ms Wiz Spells Trouble (Ms Wiz Berarti Masalah) and In Stitches with Ms Wiz (Tertawa Bersama Ms Wiz) books by Terence Blacker. The data are taken from the bilingual books which are identified and classified based on type of category shift (Catford, 1965). There are 200 complex sentences found in the books. From those complex sentences, there are 115 adverbial clauses, 62 adjective clauses, and 46 noun clauses. The researcher also found 149 category shifts. They had been classified into 11 structure shift (7.38%), 29 rank shift (19.46%), 5 intra system shift (3.36%) and 104 class shift (69.80%). After classifying those complex sentences, there are 23 kinds of class shift. SL Noun, TL Verb is mostly used in translating those complex sentences. The translator uses it in order to make natural translation that is understandable for the Indonesian reader. In addition, in these books the translator uses shifts because the structure of grammatical sentence of source language does not exist in target language. However, the translation is not only aimed at making a natural translation, but also supposed to transfer the intended meaning of the source language text into target language text accurately. |
