Summary:This study was aimed to investigate the process of writing narrative text at junior high school level. This research was intended to clarify the problems that investigated based on the description mentioned in the background, two research questions can be formulated as follows: they are: 1. What kinds of teaching and learning activities take place in writing narrative text? 2. What are the students' opinions and expectations on writing narrative text? This research was conducted in two phases at one junior high school in Pekanbaru, Riau province. There were two teachers and five students as participants involved in this study.The data were obtained from long-term observations, interviews with the teachers and the students, questionnaires for the students, and document collection. This research was a qualitative case study in nature, since it dealt with a holistic description. The procedures used to collect data were observation, interview, and questionnaire. Observation was conducted to see the kinds of teching-learning activities take place in writing narrative text and the student's opinions and expectations toward writing narrative text. Interview and questionnaire result was categorized to clarify the data gathered in the field. These procedures were used to explore data to answer the addressed questions about the kinds of teaching and learning activities and the students' opinions and expectations on writing narrative text.Data collection and data analysis are two activities but done simultaneously in a qualitative research. The process of analysis is conducted simultaneously with ongoing activities related to the teaching and writing processes. First, this study extracts the information from the data collected through the interview and observation process. The observation process also takes part in supplying the information to either students' knowledge and ways of developing skill of writing a narrative text. To simplify the analysis of data obtained, the research described the steps as follows; Interpreting the data obtained from the classroom observation by using Target Language observation Scheme and Communicative Orientation Language Target observation schemes at both classes for twenty meetings.There are two finding from research question number one. The first finding of the study showed that both respondent teachers applied process approach of teaching narrative texts. The second finding is all participants customarily went through the basic phases of the writing process of narrative text: prewriting, drafting, revising. They showed the different stages in the production of a piece of writing narrative text. Then, two finding address from research question number two. The first, students were pleased to write. The second, most of the participants only know the terms like generic structure of the text.
