Title: Portrayal of Indonesian Wives by Men and Women Writers (A Feminist Comparative Case Study In Eight Thematic-Based Selected Short Stories by Indonesia's Men and Women Writers) The purpose of this study is to draw the portrayal of Indonesian wives and the coping strategies they employ in positioning themselves in relation to their husbands in eight short stories by Indonesia's men and women writers that are selected on the basis of similarities in theme. In general, the writer tries to analyze the portrayal of Indonesian wives in the writings by men and women writers to find, if any, differences between them. The research questions consist of three major questions. The first is how Indonesian wives are portrayed by Indonesia's men and women writers; the second is what coping strategies do the wives employ in positioning themselves as related to their husbands in the short stories by both Indonesia's men and women writers; and the third is what means can be derived from these representations and coping strategies as viewed from a feminist perspective. The major issue of the whole short stories under study is the struggle of Indonesian wives in positioning themselves as related to their husbands in patriarchal society. Data findings are gained from the short stories in the form of textual evidences. The writer employs comparative textual analysis to arrive at the findings. The first findings answer the first research question; there are the portrayal of Indonesian wives as passive, selfless, oppressed, loyal, powerful, powerless, sex object, unattractive, and annoying. On the other hand, the writer finds that there are six kinds of coping strategies for each of the oppression found in the short stories. The findings are then elaborated to be able to derive at the meanings as viewed from a feminist perspective. The study reveals that as a whole Indonesia's men and women writers still portray Indonesian wives according to the prevailing stereotype of what a "good wife" is in patriarchal society. Both men and women writers fail to create the characters of Indonesian wives that can be the role model for the readers.
