520 |a This research paper entitled Defending Identity-A Struggle Against Western Hegemony in the Novel A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian by Marina Lewycka uncovers the issue of Western hegemony that influences the life of migrants characters in the novel using the hegemony theory proposed by Antonio Gramsci. This study employs a descriptive method that allows the writer to elaborate the collected data. The data are collected from the main character's utterances and descriptions in the form of textual evidences. Additionally, the analysis is directed to prove the existence of hegemony struggle carried out by the dominant group to maintain their power as it is presented in the novel. The finding shows that the Western hegemony is represented as thriving idea. Moreover, it shows that the analysis confirm strongly the theory of hegemony that was coined by Gramsci. Particularly to the concept of hegemony which gives explanation that hegemony can be done through coercion and persuasion.
