Description
Summary:English as one of the foreign language in Indonesia is given and taught as local content subject in elementary school. It is flexible for the school to teach and give this lesson and vise versa. To teach English as local content subject should need some good preparations, such as: teachers, students, and materials. However, in reality there are also some issues relate to them.In line with materials, the textbook as one of a kind of learning materials will have important factor for the teachers and students in teaching-learning process. For the experienced teachers, they can adopt and choose the appropriate materials that are suitable for their students. Meanwhile for the novice teachers, the textbook will be main sources for their teaching learning process. In line with the important of textbooks, the elementary school English textbooks should be able to present and provide the principles of learning for children in their tasks and activities. As the elementary school students can be categorized as children and teaching English as EFL for children is different from teaching adult. Therefore, this research is intended to analyze English textbooks grade five which are found and published in Bandung. They are Learning by Doing (LBD) by Kasihani, et all and English Have a Go (EHG) by Kusmana, et all. They are published by Grafindo Media Pratama Bandung. The analyses were conducted to find the forms, presentations, and the language content in the forms of learning materials. This research was a case study and descriptive qualitative. To analyze the data, I used content analysis. Therefore, the instruments in collecting the data are documents, worksheet, and checklist. The results showed that various types of forms of learning materials are presented in the textbooks including discourse, instructions, visual, and games. Most of the representation of activities and tasks in the form of texts are short and formulated in simple sentences. As formulated in the instructions, most of activities are classical or large group work, meanwhile the tasks are individual-pair small group work. The activities and tasks in these textbooks have possibility to develop the communicative language teaching. Therefore, the presentation of forms of learning materials are mostly in indirect ways and generally, the language content in the textbooks tends to develop the students' vocabulary. It was hoped that the findings of this study would assist in deciding or selecting the English textbooks for the elementary school. As well, this study may also inspire other researchers to conduct research in other issues in English for Young Learners.
