520 |a This study is centered around the issues of refusal realization in the work place context. It is aimed to investigate three aspects. The first is discovering the most common refusal strategies realized by the trainees when refusing requests. Second is exploring the effects of social power (status) on realization of refusal strategies used by the trainees. Last is exploring the effects of settings on realization of refusal strategies used by the trainees. The respondents were 20 trainees; 10 males and 10 females. The data were collected through DCT (Discourse Completion Test) and interviews. Then, those were analyzed based on the refusal strategy frameworks proposed by Aziz (2000) and Oktoprimasakti (2006).The result of the study reveals that trainees of vocational training program at PT. Krakatau Steel tend to use indirect refusal strategies with the complex patterns in realizing the refusal strategies to request. Moreover, the study finds that the common strategy that the trainees used is giving reason and explanation strategy which occurs 50 times or 40.3% of the total responses. However, social power (status) does not really contribute to the strategy that the trainees used. The study shows that the respondents employ indirect refusal and choose giving reason and explanation strategy when they are confronted with the lower, equal, and higher power requesters. In addition, the effect of settings to the refusal strategy is not really significant. The respondents use indirect refusal when they are in formal, semi-formal, and informal settings. They have a tendency to use giving reason and explanation strategy in formal and semi-formal settings. However, when dealing with the informal setting, they tend to employ white lie strategy to refuse their hearer's requests.In conclusion, the trainees use indirect refusal to save the hearer's face. The study reveals that giving reason and explanation strategy is an appropriate strategy since the intention is to maintain the social harmony between the speaker and hearer.
