Summary: | This study reports on the use of series of pictures in students' narrative writing process. The study was aimed at finding out the benefits of using series of pictures in narrative writing process and the students' attitudes toward the use of series of pictures. This study was conducted based on the consideration that pictures can be interesting teaching media for the students (Wright, 1976; Brown and others, 1983; Wright, 2009) and be able to motivate them to improve their language abilities (Wright, 2009).Thus, the students can get particular benefits of using series of pictures in writing narrative texts. A qualitative approach was employed in this study. The data were gained through observation, interview, and document analysis. The data obtained then were categorized and analyzed to be presented qualitatively. The results of the data analysis indicated that series of pictures gave several benefits in the process of writing narrative texts: (1) becoming relatively new teaching media, (2) creating enjoyable learning atmosphere, (3) prompting students to practice other skills besides writing skill, (4) providing visualizations and stimulating students' imagination and creativity, (5) motivating students to write, (6) helping students to arrange events in the story, and (7) improving students' vocabularies. In addition, the students' attitudes toward the use of series of pictures in narrative writing process can be concluded as positive. Based on the findings in this study, series of pictures gave positive influence on the students' writing process. For that reason, series of pictures are recommended to be applied as teaching media in teaching and learning process, especially in writing. |
