Description
Summary:Sperm motility is one of the semen analysis parameters which indicates how efficient spermatozoa pass through female reproduction tracts. Imbalance levels between ROS and antioxidants can affect sperm motility and lead to sperm motility disturbance. Type II diabetic patients develop chronic hyperglycemia that contributes to increasing ROS production. ROS production enhancement causing many complications in diabetic patients, one of the complications may affect sperm motility and male fertility function. A systematic review was established following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) by obtaining data from some studies that have been published around July 2010 until July 2020. All literature was obtained in Medline/PubMed and Google Scholar as electronic databases. Each researched literature discusses type II diabetes mellitus and human sperm motility. There are eight studies included which fulfill inclusion and exclusion criteria. Seven studies significantly showed a reduction of sperm motility percentage in type II diabetic patients. However, one study showed no significant result of sperm motility percentage in type II diabetic patients. From these results, we can conclude that there is a negative effect of type II diabetes mellitus in male function fertility marked by the reduction of sperm motility.
