Description
Summary:About 95% of cases of acne vulgaris end up as a scar, especially nodulocystic and conglobata type acne. Scar diminishes patients' quality of life. Scarring is associated with several risk factors, such as onset, severity, and management of acne. Anemia is an infamous factor that interferes with the wound healing process. There have been no studies about its effect in acne cases. The purpose is to know the association between hemoglobin levels and the incidence of acne scars. This cross-sectional study was conducted in December 2019. Students from the Faculty of Medicine at UPN "Veterans" Jakarta selected by stratified random sampling who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were included. Data was collected through questionnaires, measurement of hemoglobin using EasyTouch GCHb, and diagnosis of acne scar severity by dermatovenereology specialist. Of 53 respondents aged 20 (18-22) years old, 43.4% (n = 23) had a hemoglobin level less than normal, especially women (21/23). All respondents were found to have acne scars. The most common severity degree was I (21/53) while the most common type of scar was atrophic scar (28/53). In the chi-square test, a p-value of 0.615 was obtained, which means there was no significant relationship between low hemoglobin level with the incidence of severe acne scars in the sample population. There is no relationship between low hemoglobin levels with the incidence of acne scars in UPN "Veteran" Jakarta medical students.
