To achieve optimal viability after cryopreservation, DMSO was substituted with Tetragonula sp. This study aimed to determine the effect of adding Tetragonula sp honey as a cryopreservative additive on the viability of mesenchymal adipose stem cells (ADSC). The research design used a pure experimental method. Samples were obtained from healthy people. ADSC cells were cryopreserved with various concentrations of 0.5% and 0.25% honey for 1 day then cell viability was measured using the MTS assay. The media with the addition of Tetragonula sp 0.25% honey (p-value = 0.318; ) did not exceed the viability of the standardized cryoprotectant with DMSO, but the viability of the cryoprotectant media with the addition of 0.5% Tetragonula sp honey had a significant difference compared to the viability of the medium. DMSO (p = 0.038). Sugar as the main composition in honey cryoprotectant media can reduce cell viability after cryopreservation. Effective and safe alternatives to DMSO for cryopreservation should be developed..
