Description
Summary:The proportion of the population nationally to the behavior of consuming fatty foods once a day shows a fairly high number, namely 40.7%. In reality, cholesterol, a key player in the pathophysiology of coronary heart disease, is present in fat-containing diets. Orlistat is one medication that can reduce blood lipid levels. But because orlistat has side effects, it would be preferable if herbal plants took its place. Tanins, saponins, alkaloids, and flavonoids are secondary metabolites found in the leaves of West Indian Elm (Guazuma ulmifolia) with properties to reduce blood lipid levels. Through an experimental study that focused on histopathological parameters to see the scale of progression of coronary artery atherosclerosis, 30 Wistar rats were induced by high-fat diet and divided into 6 sample groups consisting of normal, negative, positive control groups, and 3 groups received a West Indian Elm leaves extract with doses of 0,2, 0,4, and 0,8 gr/KgBW. By using the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann Whitney Post-Hoc tests, significant results were obtained (P Value <0.05) between the negative control group and the positive control group, treatment 2 (0.4 g/KgBW), and treatment 3 (0.8 g/KgBW). Conclusion: West Indian elm leaf (Guazuma ulmifolia) extract reduces the development of coronary atherosclerosis and has a similar therapeutic effect as orlistat.
