Description
Summary:In the last two decades there have been 45 fatal plane crashes in Indonesia. Based on data from the American Standard Testing Material (ASTM), it is found that there are many cases where humans faint more often on airplanes than on the ground due to hypoxic conditions. Time of Useful Consciousness (TUC) is the time interval a person is able to survive carrying out flight duties due to a decrease in oxygen pressure and the point at which there is a decrease in the level of consciousness. The TUC time interval is influenced by various factors including Body Mass Index (BMI) and flight hours which affect the increase in the duration of body exposure to hypoxic conditions in pilots. This research was conducted to determine the relationship between total flying hours and BMI on WSE. Methods: The study used a type of observational analytic research with a cross-sectional method. Sampling was taken by simple random sampling technique. The sample of this research is the active Lakespra dr. Saryanto in 2021 who meets the inclusion criteria. Results: There were 53 research subjects whose results showed that there was no relationship between total flying hours (p = 1,000) and BMI (p = 0.307) on TUC in a Hypobaric Chamber equivalent to an altitude of 25,000 feet. Conclusion: On airplanes this could also be due to the fact that loggers have a lot of expertise and experience so they are able to identify the initial hypoxic response to the body and an increase in BMI not sure if there is fat content in the body which can affect the TUC results. This is in line with previous research which stated that there was no significant/significant relationship between total flying hours and BMI on TUC.
