| Summary: | Film is a powerful mass communication medium, apart from being a medium for entertainment, it is also a medium for education. Films also have a certain impact on the audience, these impacts can be in the form of psychological impacts and social impacts. Gangubai Kathiawadi succeeded in showing the meaning of patriarchal culture in Indian society. The film Gangubai Kathiawadi is a production by Sanjay Leela Bhansali which was released on February 25, 2022, and can be enjoyed now on Netflix. This research aims to reveal the meaning and representation of patriarchal culture in Gangubai Kathiawadi movie by studying the meaning of signs, denotation, connotation, and myth through Roland Barthes's Semiotics as well as discussing the social reality of discrimination against prostitutes due to patriarchal culture and its relevance to reality in the film. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative using the Gangubai Kathiawadi movie as the primary data source, and secondary data through literacy and interviews with expert sources. Researchers use scene-by-scene analysis units in discussion analysis. The research results obtained relate to the representation of patriarchal culture in the Gangubai Kathiawadi movie that there are stereotypical categories between men and women, subordination, objectification, and injustice that occurs to prostitutes, as well as superior status for men and inferior status for women. The Gangubai Kathiawadi movie succeeds in providing an overview of how women are regarded in society, especially in Indian society, which is supported by certain religious doctrines. |
