520 |a The propulsion system is one of the most important part of a ship. It's directly related to ships maneuverability while staying under control. The main components of it are the engine, transmission and propulsor. Each component has different but interrelated specific task. Therefore, selecting appropriate component type is an important concern, especially to maximize the efficiency of the whole system. Contra rotating propeller (CRP) is a propulsor configuration and concept that can help maximize the propulsion system efficiency. Therefore, this thesis aims to analyze the efficiency difference between contra rotating propeller and single screw propeller in open water conditions while using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. From the discussion of this thesis, it can be concluded that contra rotating propeller has the potential to be applied in the maritime industry. Alongside the development of electric propulsion system, the complexity of CRP also decrease, which help reducing the manufacture and maintenance cost for ships.
