La terre fut longtemps la principale source de richesse dans les sociétés d'Ancien Régime et sa possession constitue un enjeu social considérable. Noblesse et clergé en détiennent une part importante mais paysans, bourgeois ou même petit peuple des villes ne sont pas totalement écartés...
