Description
Summary:In Indonesia, most teachers in elementary school use conventional way (grammar-translation method) in teaching English without considering the context. By giving context to the students, students have opportunities to use the language in appropriate way. This study was aimed to investigate the use of Meaning, Use and Form (MUF) framework in teaching English in improving students' speaking skill in third grade of elementary school by using a quasi-experimental design. The data were gained from three instruments, namely speaking test, students' participation sheet, and video recording. The speaking scores were analyzed by using independent t-test. Students' participation sheet and video recording were analyzed by comparing both data to get types of students' participation and the description. From the statistical analysis, the posttest scores of experimental group were higher (M = 37.8, SE = 11.21) than those of the control group (M = 32.7, SE = 10.33). However, the difference was not significant, t (60) = 1.185, p > 0.05 with the effect size value r = 0.15. It was indicated that MUF framework was not effective in improving students' speaking skills. However, it had effect for improving students' participation in learning activities.
